Job Done!

Wednesday, August 17th, 2011

Well, after several months of planning and 8 days of blood sweat and tears (yes my tears not Kenny’s unless you count tears of laughter) its all over!

Kenny Herriot super human Wheelchair Athlete and myself took the Spinal Injuries Scotland Clober Farm project to the people of Scotland, to raise awareness on why we should be creating and support projects like this.

The people of Scotland and its visitors were very receptive in listening to us and receiving information packs on Spinal Injuries Scotland and Clober Farm.

We set off from Mull Of Galloway and struggled all the way up to John O’ Groats over 5 days slugging our way up hills and battling serous head winds to be greeted with sunshine and never ending climbs on The Orkney and Shetland Isles. We focused our attention on the isles where we met up with the MSP for Orkney Liam McArthur were interviewed by Radio Orkney. Over on Shetland we held a ‘meet and greet’ session with professional staff at Gilbert Bain Hospital, after we met with staff. We later went on to meet up with I’I Shetland, a local magazine and did a photo shoot and interview and then finished up our trip with an interview on Radio Shetland.

Find out more in our next edition of Newsline, for our full article.

A well known person is retiring

Wednesday, August 3rd, 2011

If you have been in the spinal unit in the last seventeen years you are probably aware of a particular voice shouting a well know saying ‘lunches darlings’.

If you recognise this saying you are likely to know who I am referring to.

It is of course the voice of Margaret.

I am sure everyone who has been through the unit knows Margaret very well as she must have served lunch to thousands of people over the years that she has worked in the spinal unit.

Margaret Beacham has worked in the Southern General catering department for thirty three years but for the past seventeen years she has been serving breakfast and lunch to those in the spinal unit.

Margaret is one of those people who will not only serve you food but you get a mouthful of patter as well.  Margaret would bring your lunch to you, but if needed she would help you with a gown and she would also help put on a feeding strap.

After this help she would make a comment like ‘do you want me to eat it for you as well?’ but this is the way Margaret is. Although you would get various comments ‘oh here he comes again’ you know you were going to be looked after as this is just her way.

Time has come and Margaret is going to hang up her catering clothes. She is retiring on Friday 19th August 2011 and there will be a gathering in the day room of the spinal unit on Thursday 18th August at 1pm.

If you would like to see Margaret have a tear in her eye you are welcome to come along and say good bye to a very well known and liked person.
