The SIS Annual Report for 2010-2011 will arrive with our members over the next few days, and there are a few interesting items you should keep an eye out for. One of which is a tear off slip that members can bring to the AGM to have a chance to win one of three E-book readers (Kindles). After the main meeting a small event with entertainment (a caricaturist) and refreshments will be provided.

The venue for the AGM is the Queen Elizabeth National Spinal Injury Unit in the Stepdown Unit.
The Spinal Injuries Scotland AGM will take place at 6pm on Monday 3rd October. This is an ideal opportunity to get involved with the Organisation or to simply find out more about the year gone by. We are looking forward to hearing members’ views and suggestions

The Annual Report will be posted to all members in September giving a summary of the passed year at SIS, along with an overview of what lies ahead. Also within the annual report will be information on a prize give away for the day, because as well as discussing the business side of the charity it will be a great chance for members to engage with the board of directors, and the staff and volunteers. After the main meeting a small event with entertainment and refreshments will be provided.

The venue is the Queen Elizabeth National Spinal Injury Unit in the Stepdown Unit. If you would like any further information please contact the office on: info@sisonline.org or 0141 427 7686.

Exciting new features are being added to this year’s Naidex Scotland (14th – 15th September SECC Glasgow), Scotland’s premier disability, rehabilitation and healthcare exhibition which is completely free to attend and only comes around once every two years.

It is estimated that in Scotland there is a disabled person or person with a long-term illness living in just over one in three households. As Scotland’s only disability, rehabilitation and homecare show, Naidex Scotland caters for a widespread need by providing access to all the latest independent living solutions and services available on the disability market. It is the ideal place to see all the new and innovative independent living solutions, from wheelchairs and WAVs to adjustable furniture and bathing and showering equipment.

Visiting Naidex Scotland also provides an excellent opportunity to get free help and advice on a vast range of issues. Some of the UK’s leading organisations and charities will be at the show to offer information and guidance, including Enable, the chosen charity of the year for Naidex Scotland. The popular Meet the OT feature will be offering members of the public a chance to speak face-to-face with a qualified occupational therapist, who will give professional advice for free, and appointments can be booked in advance at www.naidex.co.uk/ot Another aspect of the show not to be missed is Spinal Injuries Scotland’s seminar in the Inspiration Theatre at 12pm on Wednesday 14th.

Visitors to Naidex Scotland can expect to see all the usual show features that make visiting so worthwhile such as the Communication & Learning Village, home to the latest communication aids and assistive technology. New features that have now been added to the show include the Car Zone, where many of the UK’s leading vehicle converters will be exhibiting the latest wheelchair assisted vehicle developments. Also making its Naidex Scotland debut is KideQuip, the must see zone dedicated to children with special needs, where visitors and healthcare professionals will be able to meet and discuss individual needs and products with exhibitors.

Naidex Scotland also presents a wealth of career benefits for all healthcare professionals. Not only will they have the opportunity to become acquainted with the latest products on offer; they can also enhance their professional development and add to their portfolio by attending the free CPD seminars supported The College of Occupational Therapists.

For more information on Naidex Scotland and to register for free entry please visit www.naidex.co.uk/scotland or click on the logo below and quote priority code ESIS

Visit Spinal Injuries Scotland on stand G12 at Naidex Scotland

Well, after several months of planning and 8 days of blood sweat and tears (yes my tears not Kenny’s unless you count tears of laughter) its all over!

Kenny Herriot super human Wheelchair Athlete and myself took the Spinal Injuries Scotland Clober Farm project to the people of Scotland, to raise awareness on why we should be creating and support projects like this.

The people of Scotland and its visitors were very receptive in listening to us and receiving information packs on Spinal Injuries Scotland and Clober Farm.

We set off from Mull Of Galloway and struggled all the way up to John O’ Groats over 5 days slugging our way up hills and battling serous head winds to be greeted with sunshine and never ending climbs on The Orkney and Shetland Isles. We focused our attention on the isles where we met up with the MSP for Orkney Liam McArthur were interviewed by Radio Orkney. Over on Shetland we held a ‘meet and greet’ session with professional staff at Gilbert Bain Hospital, after we met with staff. We later went on to meet up with I’I Shetland, a local magazine and did a photo shoot and interview and then finished up our trip with an interview on Radio Shetland.

Find out more in our next edition of Newsline, for our full article.

We decided that despite it being somewhat un-spring-like to give the magazine a bit of a revamp anyway.

It is hoped that from the outset you find it an interesting and stimulating read and may even spur you to either write something yourself or at least suggest something you think we ought to cover.

In this new-look edition we cover topics as diverse as:

The portrayal of people with spinal cord injury ITV and film

The exploits of the UK’s only paraplegic motor cycle racer, Kerr Douglas

Holiday ideas in Hong Kong and Lanzarote

We do hope that you enjoy your Newsline.

As always, we are always looking for input for the magazine. If you have any suggestions for articles or you want to write an article yourself, please contact andy@sisonline.org

Did you know that there is a representative available for you to speak to at all of the outreach clinics that the liaison sisters attend?

These clinics are Aberdeen, Inverness, Arbroath, Dumfries and the Borders.

At each of these clinics held throughout the year there is a representative from SIS there for you to speak to, to answer any questions about the charity or in general about living with a spinal injury.

We are not there to rope you in as a member, we are there to offer our services to you and if you choose to sign up as a member all good and well as membership is free.

We are approachable so come and have a chat with us at any clinic.

If you are not sure when the next clinic is in your area, have a look on the main website here.
