Questions over disabled access to 2014 games

Thursday, January 20th, 2011

SIS vice chair, Clare Byrne, represents the charity on the Mobility and Access Committee for Scotland (MACS). A recent article in The Herald regarding the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games has included criticism of the organisers by MACS member, Grahame Lawson.

Grahame was alarmed at a recent meeting to discover that planners would appear to have seriously underestimated the amount of disabled spectators who are likely to attend the Games.  Grahame contrasted the Glasgow organisers’ approach to that of the 2012 London Olympics organisers, who were estimating as early as 2008 that around 7% of visitors would face difficulty in the use of stairs. The London organisers consulted extensively with a number of disability groups as part of their preparations. It seems that in Glasgow, while the needs of disabled athletes have been taken into account, those of spectators have been largely overlooked, since 7% would equate to around 100,000 visitors being affected.

Would you like to try skiing?

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011

Options have joined forces with Disability Snowsport UK and have started running ski lessons at Braehead Xscape for anyone with a Spinal Cord Injury.  Sessions take place on alternate Wednesday evenings at the SnoZone which is an indoor snow slope at Braehead, Glasgow.  You will have an hour of instruction from a qualified DSUK instructor on real snow and we can accommodate pretty much any level of injury.  Options will cover the cost of your first lesson to see if you like it and any further sessions are at a reduced rate as they will be subsidised by Options and DSUK.  All you need to get started is some warm clothes.  If Options sessions on Wednesday evenings don’t suit, you can book lessons direct with the DSUK Adaptive Instructor based at Braehead by e-mailing Keira@disabilitysnowsport.org.uk

Contact Claire at the spinal unit for more info or to book in for your first lesson on 0141 201 2558 or clairelincoln@nhs.net

Emma Douglas on horse

Emma showing her talent

Dressage riding is a passion for Emma Douglas and having a spinal injury is not going to stop that.

Falling from a horse in 2005 left Emma wheelchair bound but this has not stopped her competing in dressage competitions.

2009 was her first year in competitive Para Dressage and she has notched up some quite impressive results since.

27 mile Loch Lomond swim!

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

Ronnie Dodd 31 is planning to swim the full 27mile length of Loch Lomond on Saturday to raise funds for Spinal Injuries Scotland and Momentum.

Initially Ronnie only planned the swim as a fitness challenge, but later decided to do it for charity. He chose SIS and Momentum because of the support and assistance they gave to one of his friends, Gill Lindsay.

SIS member, Gill, sustained a spinal injury two years ago as a result of a fall from her loft. She received support from SIS volunteers when she was an inpatient at the QENSIU and believes both charities played a huge part in her rehab.

To put Ronnie’s epic, 27mile challenge into perspective, the English Channel swim is a mere 19miles! Ronnie has been training 5 days a week for the past year to get in shape for this.

You can support Ronnie via his just giving page here.

All of us at SIS wish Ronnie the best of luck (and weather!) for Saturday.

Ronnie’s challenge has also featured in the Glasgow Evening Times here.
