Road Safety

Safe Drive Stay Alive and other Road Safety Initiatives
Over the past 3 years SIS has spoken to approximately 12,500 5th year pupils across the North East of Scotland, taking in the entirety of Aberdeenshire and Morayshire; the talk given is part of a show put together by Aberdeenshire Council and Grampian Fire & Rescue.

The show involves members of the emergency services, A&E Surgeons, bereaved parents as well as a spinally injured person. Each speaker tells the school pupils of the devastating affect that road collisions have had on not just their lives but also those of their nearest and dearest. This is interspersed with a DVD showing 3 youngsters going for a night out in a friend's car and the consequences of not obeying the rules of the road.

It is an incredibly hard-hitting presentation and during every show members of the audience break down in tears at the harsh reality of what they may have thought, up until then, was all a bit of a laugh.

The campaign cannot take full responsibility but last year the road deaths and serious injuries in the 17-25 age bracket fell in the region for the first time in a long time. It can only be hoped that this is partially down to this preventative measure.

An SIS member has also been filmed for a DVD used by Grampian Fire and Rescue; again this is showing viewers the changes they have had to make to their life since a road collision resulted in paralysis from the chest down.

This will be part of the film, which also includes bereaved families of victims of road deaths and will be shown to schools, colleges and companies throughout the Grampian region by the Fire & Rescue Service.

It is hoped that it will make people think twice before they drive recklessly on the roads.
